1964 April 24

Friday – April 24th

Jim Bunning (1-0) versus Bob Buhl (1-0) as the Cubs came to town for three games. Six days earlier Buhl shut out the Phillies 7-0 on three hits. The only loss for the Phils thus far. Bunning beat the Mets in his only start eight days earlier. Two off-days and a rain-out meant he was well-rested.

Bunning (2-0) upped his record with a six-hitter. Striking out nine while walking just two as the Phillies collected 16 hits in the 10-0 shutout. Buhl (1-1) took the loss.

Tony Gonzalez, John Herrnstein, and Bunning all had three hits. Gonzalez knocking in four runs and Johnny Callison three. Callison (#1) connected for a two-run shot in the sixth.

Play Ball

After taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, the Phillies put the game away with four runs in the second:

  • John Herrnstein led off a triple and scored on Clay Dalrymple’s single to make it 2-0.
  • With Gene Mauch playing small-ball, Bobby Wine bunted Dalrymple to second.
  • Dalrymple stopped at third when Bunning singled.
  • Tony Taylor walked to fill the bases for the red-hot Richie Allen. But Allen struck out swinging for the second out.
  • Buhl then precipitated his own downfall by hitting Callison to force in a run to make it 3-0 Phils.
  • Gonzalez cleared the bases with a double off the scoreboard in right. Giving Gonzalez four RBIs on the day and eight on the season, making it 6-0 Phillies, and sending Buhl to an early shower.

The win made it three straight for the Phils – and six wins in the first seven games.

Around the League

Leading 2-0 after one, the Giants scored five times in the top of the second to en route to a 15-5 win over the Reds.

Willie McCovey (#5) and Willie Mays (#7) homered for the Giants. Juan Marichal (2-0) didn’t pitch well. Giving up all 5 runs on 13 hits. But he pitched a complete game and struck out 13.

The win allowed the Giants to maintain a share of first place with the Phillies.
