Friday – June 26

The Phillies moved into St. Louis for a four-game weekend series against the Cardinals.

It was a classic matchup in the first game – Jim Bunning versus Bob Gibson – but neither were around at the end.

On to the Action

The Cards scored in the bottom of the first:

Curt Flood led off with a double and scored on Ken Boyer’s two-out single.

And again in the third:

Lou Brock led off with a double and scored on Bob Skinner’s two-out single to make it 2-0 Cards.

Then the Phillies tied it up in the top of the fifth:

Cookie Rojas hit a two-run homer (#2).

And took the lead with two more in the sixth:

Richie Allen hit a two-run homer (#15) to make it 4-2.

And then the Cards took the lead in the bottom of the eighth:

Bob Skinner led off with a double.
Dick Groat singled and Skinner advanced to third.

With runners on first and third and nobody out – and concerned that Jim Bunning was tiring – Gene Mauch replaced him with Ed Roebuck.

Julian Javier greeted Roebuck with a double to trim the deficit to 4-3 – Groat stopping at third.
With runners on second and third and still nobody out, Roebuck walked Tim McCarver intentionally to load the bases and set up a force at any base.
Roebuck then blew the save when Phil Gagliano – who was pinch-hitting for Bob Gibson – tied the game with a sacrifice fly to deep left. Javier tagged after the catch and moved to third.
With runners on first and third and one out, Curt Flood bunted and Roebuck fielded the ball. His only play was first base. He got Flood at first, but Javier scored to put the Cardinals ahead 5-4.

Ron Taylor came in to pitch the top of the ninth.

Tony Gonzalez led off with a double.
Clay Dalrymple followed with a home run (#2) to flip the lead to 6-5.

In the bottom of the ninth, Ed Roebuck gave up a one-out single to Bob Skinner, but he retired the next three batters to end the game with the Phillies on top.

Ed Roebuck (2-2) had blown the save – but he picked up the win. Ron Taylor (1-2) took the loss.

Around the League

The Giants won a 4-3 squeaker over the Dodgers with Bob Hendley (7-4) notching a complete-game victory. The win kept the Giants one game behind the Phillies – while the loss dropped the Cards to nine games back.
