The Phillies were idle after sweeping a doubleheader from the Mets on Father’s Day – which included Jim Bunning’s masterpiece of a Perfect Game – and going 6-and-2 on the short road trip.

They were returning home the next day to begin a three-game series against the Cubs.

Around the League –The Giants beat the Reds 6-2 to pick up the ½ game they lost the day before and now trailed the first-place Phillies by 1½ games.
