Fans Hoping for Replay

A crowd of 39,823 showed up at Dodgers Stadium to see Sandy Koufax (10-4) face the Phillies less than a month after he fired a 3-0 no-hitter in Philadelphia on June 4.

His mound opponent tonight was lefty Dennis Bennett (8-4).

Koufax was having another stellar season. His ten wins featured five complete games and four shutouts.

On the other hand, Dennis Bennett hadn’t won since picking up his eighth win on June 16th – and he was complaining of tendonitis in his throwing arm.

Koufax and Bennett put together three shutout innings to start the game.

In the top of the fourth, Cookie Rojas lined a ball down the rightfield line. By the time Frank Howard chased it down and got it back to the infield, Rojas was safe on third with a triple.

Johnny Callison then followed with his 11th home run of the year to put the Phillies on top 2-0 ─ his 40th and 41st RBIs.

Bennett and Koufax traded scoreless half-innings.

With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Ron Fairly walked and moved the third when John Roseboro followed with a single. When Derrell Griffith grounded out to Tony Taylor, Fairly scored to cut the Phillies lead to 2-1.

Koufax kept the Phillies off the scoreboard in the top of the sixth.

In the bottom of the sixth, Maury Wills singled and moved to second on Nate Oliver’s sacrifice bunt.

Willie Davis singled to shallow center – but it was deep enough that Wills decided to try to score. Cookie Rojas scooped the ball and fired to the plate, but Wills slid under the tag to tie the game 2-2 – Willie Davis moved to second on the play.

One out later, Willie Davis tagged and moved to third after Tommy Davis flew out to deep center.

In a curious bit of strategy, Gene Mauch ordered Bennett to walk Frank Howard intentionally to get to Ron Fairly, a left-handed hitter.

With runners on first and second and one out, Fairly thwarted Mauch’s strategy by drilling a single that allowed Willie Davis to score and give the Dodgers a 3-2 advantage.

And that was it for the scoring.

Koufax (11-4) retired nine of the last 10 batters he faced to sew up the complete-game victory.

Dennis Bennett (8-5) pitched well – but took the loss.

Marichal Notches #11

Willie Mays homered in the bottom of the first with two outs – his 23rd round-tripper of the season – and Del Crandall and Jose Pagan hit back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the second to stake Juan Marichal to a 2-0 lead over the Pirates.

That’s one more run than Marichal (11-3) needed as he pitched a seven-hit 2-1 victory at Candlestick Park.

The win moved the Giants 1½ games ahead of the Phillies.
