Malcolm X traveled to Mecca to meet with devout Muslims from different races and cultures. He preached the message that the Muslim religion would overcome racial barriers throughout the world.


The Phillies turned the tables on the Cubs in the rubber game of the series with an 8-1 victory. Four runs in the top of the second were more than enough for Dennis Bennett (1-0) to post the win.

Phillies Fourth:

  • With one out, rookie John Herrnstein, making his first start in the majors, singled.
  • Clay Dalrymple followed with a single.
  • Larry Jackson walked Bobby Wine to load the bases.
  • Dennis Bennett bounced out to first. The runners moved up a base. Herrnstein scoring to make it 1-0.
  • Tony Taylor hit a two-run single to make it 3-0, advanced to second on the throw to the plate, and scored when Richie Allen followed with a single to make it 4-0 Phillies.

Rookie first-baseman John Herrnstein (#1) hit his first home run and Richie Allen added a pair (#2 & #3).

Ernie Banks (#2) homered for the Cubs. Larry Jackson (1-1) took the loss.


John Herrnstein played fullback and linebacker for the Michigan Wolverines.

In the first game during his senior season of 1958, he rushed for 144 yards and scored two TDs against USC. But two games later, he tore up his knee while backing up the line to end his football career.

The Phillies signed him as an amateur free agent in December as soon the college season ended. He then spent six years in the Phillies chain before being promoted to the parent club to start the 1964 season.


Around the League

The win gave the Phillies a 4-1 start on the season.

Bob Gibson (2-0) gave up four hits in a 6-1 victory over the Houston Colts.

Nine runs in the bottom of the sixth gave the Giants an 11-5 lead en route to a 13-6 laugher over the Reds.  Willie Mays (#6) hit a solo shot for the Giants. The wins gave both teams 4-2 records to trail the Phillies by ½-game.
