1964 April 22

Wednesday – April 22nd

Phillies foiled again.

Scheduled to begin a two-game set with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Mother Nature intruded to postpone the first game of the series.

Made it three straight days without a game for the Phils.

Let’s Make a Deal

Johnny Klippstein notched two of the Phillies first four wins in relief. But strained his pitching arm.

General manager John Quinn placed Klippstein on the Disabled List with arm soreness. To replace Klippstein, Quinn purchased Ed Roebuck from the Washington Senators.

1964 imageEd Roebuck was an eight-year veteran. Seven with the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers. Traded from the Dodgers to the Washington Senators for Marv Breeding on July 30, 1963.

Lifetime, Roebuck appeared in 403 games. All but one in relief. Compiling a record of 40-22. With the Senators so far this season, he appeared in two games and pitched only one inning before being acquired by the Phillies.

Around the League

The Giants beat the Braves 8-6 to slip into first place ½ game ahead of the idle Phillies.

Willie McCovey (#2, #3, & #4) hit three home runs to power the win.
