Riding a four-game winning streak, Gene Mauch sent the Chris Short (10-6) to the mound to face Lary Jackson (14-9).

Play Ball:

After a scoreless first, the Phils scored in the top of the second:

  • Clay Dalrymple, Frank Thomas, and Tony Taylor hit back-to-back-to-back singles to load the bases.
  • Ruben Amaro laid down a squeeze bunt to score Dalrymple.

The Cubs tied it up in both the bottom of the fifth:

  • Andre Rodgers, Larry Jackson, and Leo Burke singled – Rodgers scoring to make it 1-1.

And took the lead in the sixth:

  • Ron Santo homered (#22) to make it 2-1.

And then the Phillies took back the lead in the eighth:

  • Johnny Briggs pinch-hit for Chris Short and singled.
  • John Herrnstein sacrificed Briggs to second.
  • Richie Allen walked.
  • After Johnny Callison flew out to center for the second out, Wes Covington hit a three-run home run (#9) to put the Phillies on top 4-2.

Bob Kennedy replaced starter Larry Jackson with Don Elston (1-1). And Gene Mauch made a double-switch:

  1. Johnny Briggs remained in the game playing leftfield and batting ninth.
  2. Jack Baldschun (4-5) took the mound and moved into the cleanup spot vacated by Covington.

After Baldschun retired the Cubs without a hit in the eighth, the Phillies expanded the lead in the ninth:

  • With two outs, Johnny Briggs singled and John Herrnstein walked.
  • After both runners moved up on a wild pitch, Bobby Wine hit a two-run single to up the Phillies lead to 6-2.

With a four-run lead and Jack Baldschun on the mound, the game seemed to be in the win-column – especially after Baldschun struck out Billy Cowan for the first out.

But the Cubs still had life:

  • Vic Roznovsky singled.
  • After Doug Clemens forced Roznovsky for the second out, pinch-hitter Len Gabrielson walked.
  • Jimmy Stewart surprised the Phillies with a two-out bunt ─ and beat it out to load the bases.
  • Then Leo Burke cleared the bases with a double to slash the Phillies lead to 6-5.

With Burke representing the tying run at second and with Billy Williams stepping to the plate, Jack Baldschun knuckled down and got Williams to fly out to end the game.

Baldschun didn’t pitch well, yet picked up the save (#16). Chris Short (11-6) got the win and Larry Jackson (14-10) took the loss.

That made it five straight wins for the Phillies

Around the League:

The Cardinals overcame a three-run homer (#34) by Willie Mays to top the Giants 6-4. The loss dropped the Giants four games behind the Phillies. Even with the win, the Cards remained 8½ games out.
