Two rookies started the series finale:
- John Boozer (1-1) for the Phillies.
- Larry Miller (1-2) for the Dodgers.
Larry Miller, a 27-year old rookie left-hander, was a June 10 call-up from the AA Albuquerque Dukes of the Texas League. To merit the promotion, he went 8-0 with a 1.68 ERA in 19 games.
This was his sixth big-league start since the call-up and his first appearance against the Phillies.
Play Ball:
The Dodgers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first:
- Maury Wills doubled – his seventh hit of the series – stole third, and scored on a ground out by Jim Gilliam.
The Phillies tied the game in the bottom of the second:
- Alex Johnson and Ruben Amaro singled – Johnson taking third.
- One out later, Bobby Wine singled to score Johnson.
But then the Dodgers took the game over by scoring two runs in the fourth:
- Willie Davis singled and scored on Ron Fairly’s triple.
- Nate Oliver singled to score Fairly.
Adding another in the sixth:
- Tommy Davis hit a solo shot (#7).
And added two more in the seventh:
- Nate Oliver singled and moved to second on Larry Miller’s bunt.
- One out later, Jim Gilliam singled to score Oliver.
- Willie Davis hit a fly to center that should’ve been caught, but Cookie Rojas dropped it and Gilliam scored all the way from first.
Other than the run in the second, Larry Miller (2-1) shut the Phillies out the rest of the way to pick up the 6-1 victory.
John Boozer (1-2) took the loss.
