Jim Bunning (13-4) wrapped up the series against lefty Joe Gibbon (9-5).
Play Ball:
The Pirates jumped on Bunning in the top of the first:
- With one out, Bill Virdon walked.
- Roberto Clemente homered (#8).
But the Phillies took over with runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings.
Phillies third:
- Cookie Rojas singled.
- After Johnny Callison struck out, Richie Allen went deep (#22) to knot the score 2-2.
Phillies fourth:
- Tony Taylor doubled.
- Gus Triandos homered (#5) to put the Phillies ahead 4-2.
Phillies fifth:
- With one out, Richie Allen hit his second home run of the game (#23) to push the Phillies lead to 5-2.
- Frank Thomas singled.
- Wes Covington pinch-hit for Alex Johnson and singled – Thomas taking third. Then John Herrnstein came in to run for Covington.
- Tony Taylor singled to score Thomas – Herrnstein stopping at second.
- Ruben Amaro singled to load the bases.
- Gus Triandos walked to force home Herrnstein and extend the Phillies margin to 7-2.
The Pirates got to Bunning in the top of the seventh:
- With two outs, Donn Clendenon homered (#8) as a pinch-hitter.
John Boozer () relieved Bunning in the top of the eighth, and the Phillies iced the cake in the bottom of the eighth:
- Clay Dalrymple doubled.
- Tony Gonzalez singled – Dalrymple moving to third.
- With Johnny Callison batting, Roy Face unleashed a wild pitch – Dalrymple scored to make it 8-3 and Gonzalez moved up to second.
- Richie Allen singled to score Gonzalez and end the scoring at 9-3.
John Boozer gave up two hits in two scoreless innings of relief to earn the save (#2). Jim Bunning (14-4) got the win and Joe Gibbon (9-6) took the loss.
The win ended the season series with the Pirates with the Phillies holding a 10-8 edge.
Around the League:
The Reds lost to the Dodgers 1-0 – Phil Ortega’s three-hitter (6-5) topping Jim O’Toole’s six-hitter (13-6).
And the Giants beat the Cardinals 3-2 in 10 innings.
Those outcomes placed the Giants and Reds in a tie for second place – 7½ games behind the Phillies.
