Ten-game winners Chris Short (10-5) and Turk Farrell (10-7) tangled in the final game of the series.
Play Ball:
Short and Farrell locked up in a scoreless pitcher’s duel through the first three innings.
In the top of the fourth:
- Al Spangler tripled and scored on Nellie Fox’s double.
- One out later, Fox took third on Walt Bond’s single and scored on a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.
The game progressed without change until the Phillies rallied in the bottom of the ninth:
- Wes Covington doubled.
With left-handed hitting Clay Dalrymple due up, Harry Craft summoned Hal Woodeshick (2-7) from the bullpen.
Gene Mauch countered by sending Gus Triandos up to pinch-hit for Dalrymple.
- Triandos – just 1-for-14 as a pinch-hitter – singled to score Covington and trim the deficit to 2-1.
When Gene Mauch sent Alex Johnson in to pinch-run for Triandos, Harry Craft replaced Woodeshick with right-hander Jim Owens to face Tony Taylor.
Owens got Taylor to ground into a 4-6-3 double-play to end the game and pick up the save (#2).
Turk Farrell (11-7) got the win and Chris Short (10-6) took the loss.
The idle Giants picked up ½-game to now trail the Phillies by a game-and-a-half.
After the Game: The Phillies traded Gray Kroll, Wayne Graham, and cash to the Mets in exchange for Frank Thomas. Graham and Kroll were prospects, but Thomas was a veteran power-hitter who played several positions.
