Rick Wise (2-1) versus Galen Cisco (4-12) in the second game of the series.

Play Ball:

rick wise imageAfter Rick Wise pitched his way out of trouble in the top of the first, the Phillies scored in the bottom half:

  • Tony Gonzalez tripled and scored on Richie Allen’s single.
  • One out later, Wes Covington doubled to score Allen.

The Mets got to Wise in the top of the second:

  • Jim Hickman doubled and scored on Larry Elliot’s single to cut the Phillies lead in half at 2-1.

The Phillies padded the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the third:

  • Johnny Callison doubled, moved to third on a ground out, and scored when Frank Thomas grounded out.

After a scoreless fourth inning, the Phillies put the game away with eight runs in the bottom of the fifth:

  • With one out, Johnny Callison and Wes Covington hit back-to-back doubles.
  • One out later , Clay Dalrymple singled to score Covington.

Casey Stengel replaced Galen Cisco with 22-year-old rookie left-hander Ron Locke (1-1).

  • Tony Taylor reached first on a Ron Hunt error to put runners on first and second with two outs.
  • Ruben Amaro homered (#3) to make it 8-1.
  • Rick Wise and Tony Gonzalez hit back-to-back singles and moved up on a wild pitch.
  • Richie Allen walked to load the bases.
  • Johnny Callison – batting for the second time in the inning – singled. Wise and Gonzalez scored to make it 10-1 Phillies – Wise stopping at second.
  • Wes Covington singled to score Wine and make it 11-1 – but the inning ended with Covington thrown out 9-2-6 trying to stretch his single into a double.

The Mets rallied for three runs in the top of the sixth:

  • With one out, Ron Hunt and Joe Christopher hit back-to-back singles.
  • Jesse Gonder homered (#7) to clear the bases to cut the lead to 11-4 Phillies.

Mauch replaced starter Rick Wise with John Boozer (1-2) and Boozer struck out the first two batters he faced to end the inning.

From there, the teams traded single runs to end the scoring at 12-5 in favor of the Phillies.

The Phillies scored in the bottom of the sixth:

  • With one out, Clay Dalrymple doubled and scored on Tony Taylor’s single.

The Mets ended the scoring in the top of the eighth:

  • Joe Christopher homered (#12).

Rick Wise (3-1) got the win, John Boozer the save (#1), and Galen Cisco (4-13) the loss.


Around the League:

The Giants beat the Reds 1-0 on Gaylord Perry’s two hitter (8-8) to keep pace with the Phillies – 2½ games behind. Joe Nuxhall deserved better fate – giving up one run on eight hits while striking out nine – but he was tagged with the loss (8-7).

The loss dropped the Reds five games off the pace.
