1964 imageIn San Francisco, the Republican National Convention nominated Barry Goldwater as its candidate for President.


Art Mahaffey (7-4) versus Joe Gibbon (6-2) in the series finale.

Play Ball:

After a scoreless first inning, the Phillies scored a pair of runs in the top second inning:

  • Richie Allen singled to center.
  • After Danny Cater flew out, Ruben Amaro hit a ground ball to short that Gene Alley couldn’t handle.
  • One out later, Clay Dalrymple doubled to score both Allen and Amaro and make it 2-0 Phillies.

The Phillies made it 4-0 with two more runs in the third:

  • Cookie Rojas singled, moved to second on Johnny Callison’s sacrifice bunt, and advanced to third on a fly to deep right.
  • After Richie Allen walked, Danny Cater doubled to score Rojas – Allen going first to third.
  • Two pitches later, Allen scored on a wild pitch.

The Pirated halved the Phillies lead to 4-2 with two runs in the bottom of the fourth:

  • Bill Mazeroski reached first on Richie Allen’s 16th error and Jim Pagliaroni homered (#5).

The Phils put the pressure on the Pirates with three in the fifth:

  • Cookie Rojas doubled to left and advanced to third on Johnny Callison’s infield single.

Danny Murtaugh replaced Joe Gibbon with Roy Face (2-3).

  • Face struck out Tony Taylor, but he walked Richie Allen to load the bases.
  • John Herrnstein pinch-hit for Danny Cater and moved the runners up a base on a groundout – Rojas scoring to make it 5-2.
  • And Ruben Amaro cleared the bases with a single to up the lead to 7-2.

The Pirated shrunk the Phillies lead to 7-3 in the sixth:

  • With one out, Jim Pagliaroni doubled.
  • One out later, Willie Stargell pinch-hit for Roy Face and singled to score Pagliaroni.

And the Pirates rallied in the seventh:

  • Bill Virdon and Roberto Clemente singled.

Gene Mauch pulled the plug on Mahaffey and replaced him with Jack Baldschun (3-3).

  • Jerry Lynch greeted Baldschun with a two-run double to make it a 7-5 game.

From there, Baldschun flirted with trouble but delivered a two-hit, no run, three-inning save (#9).

Art Mahaffey (8-4) got the win and Joe Gibbon (6-3) the loss.


Around the League:

The Giants lost for the third straight time – this one a 6-0 shutout by the Mets Hank Fischer (7-5) – allowing the Phillies to creep into a tie for first place.
