On to the Action:

With 35,541 fans watching the second game of the two-game series, starters Phil Ortega and Chris Short pitched a pair of scoreless innings.

Then the Phillies got to Ortega in the top of the third:

  • With one out, John Herrnstein walked.
  • Johnny Callison hit a line drive over the right-field fence (#12) to give the Phillies the lead – and give him 43 RBIs.
  • Richie Allen reached first on an error by Derrell Griffith and moved to second when Wes Covington grounded out.
  • Clay Dalrymple singled to score Allen and make it 3-0.

The Dodgers answered in the bottom half:

  • John Roseboro and Derrell Griffith hit back-to-back singles.
  • Lee Walls struck out pinch-hitting for Phil Ortega.
  • Maury Wills hit a ground ball to third. Richie Allen fielded the ball – but overthrew first and the runners were awarded two bases when the ball bounced into the stands – Roseboro scoring to cut the gap to 3-1, Griffith moving to third, and Wills taking second.

Chris Short bore down to retire Nate Oliver and Willie Davis to end the inning.

But he gave up another run in the fourth:

  • Frank Howard’s solo-shot (#19) trimmed the deficit to 3-2.

But that was it for the scoring. Short gave up one hit in the fifth and sixth innings – and then gave way to Jack Baldschun in the seventh.

Baldschun allowed one hit, walked no one, and struck out two over the final three innings to pick up the save (#5).

Chris Short (7-4) got the win and Phil Ortega (3-3) the loss.

The win gave the Phillies a split of series and a 5-3 edge in the season series with the Dodgers.

Around the League: The Giants edged the Pirates 6-5 to maintain their 1½-game lead over the Phillies.
