After taking the first game of the series, Gene Mauch sent Ray Culp (7-7) out to face Warren Spahn (6-10) in the second game.
Play Ball:
No score going into the bottom of the third:
- Warren Spahn helped his own cause with a home run (#1) – the 35th of his 17-year career.
The Phillies tied it in the fourth:
- Johnny Callison beat out a bunt.
- One out later, Wes Covington singled to send Callison to third.
- Danny Cater forced Covington at second – Callison scoring.
Culp and Spahn took it into top of the seventh still tied 1-1:
- With one out, Bobby Wine homered (#4).
And the Phillies added insurance in the eighth:
- With one out, Johnny Callison singled.
- After Richie Allen forced Callison at second, Wes Covington walked – and Ruben Amaro came in to pinch-run for Covington.
- Danny Cater singled. With Allen trying to score from second, Rico Carty tried to throw him out at the plate. But Eddie Mathews botched the relay. The ball rolled far enough for Amaro to score as well.
The Phillies beat the Braves 4-1 with Ray Culp (8-7) giving up seven hits in the efficient win. But he ran into trouble in the bottom of the eighth. With runners on second and third with two outs, Jack Baldschun came in to put out the fire.
Baldschun pitched a scoreless ninth to notch the save (#11).
Ray Culp (8-7) got the win and Warren Spahn (6-11) took the loss.
That made it two straight for Phils and two straight losses for the Braves.

The Giants beat the Cubs 7-3 to remain one game behind.
After the Game:
The Phillies placed rookie Danny Cater on the Disabled List and called rookie Alex Johnson up from AAA Arkansas to take Cater’s place on the roster.
Alex Johnson
Alex Johnson was 21 years old.
A star football player in high school, he turned down a scholarship at Michigan State to sign with the Phillies as an amateur free agent in 1961. Speaking of football, his younger brother was future NFL running back Ron Johnson.
In 90 games with the Arkansas Travelers, Alex Johnson batted .316 with 21 home runs and 71 RBIs.
