  • Richie Allen homered (#18).

And the Phils added another run in the third:

  • Ruben Amaro homered (#2).

Then the Giants halved the lead in the fourth:

  • Jim Ray Hart homered (#16).

The Phillies answered right back in the bottom half:

  • Johnny Callison tripled off the scoreboard.
  • After Richie Allen walked, Wes Covington force Allen at second – Callison scoring to make it 3-1.

After a scoreless fifth, the Giants closed the gap in the top of the sixth:

  • Jim Ray Hart hit another solo homer (#17) to move to within a run at 3-2 – his 50th

Concerned that Dennis Bennett’s arm miseries were flaring up, Gene Mauch replaced him with John Boozer (1-1),

Boozer retired the Giants in the sixth and the seventh, but he ran into trouble in the eighth:

  • With one out, Willie Mays singled, stole second, and moved to third on a ground out.
  • Willie McCovey doubled to tie the score 3-3.

That’s the way regulation ended.

But with Jack Baldschun on the mound for the Phillies, the Giants scored immediately in the top of the tenth:

  • Harvey Kuenn led off with a single.
  • Hal Lanier hit a ground ball to short. Ruben Amaro fielded the ball and went for the 6-4-3 double-play. Lanier was out at first – but Kuenn was ruled safe at second.
  • With first base open, Baldschun walked Willie Mays intentionally.
  • Jim Ray Hart hit an infield single – his third hit of the game – the runners moving up to load the bases.
  • Willie McCovey singled to score Kuenn and Mays – Hart moving to third.
  • Jesus Alou singled to score Hart and make it 6-3.

Juan Marichal (15-5) retired the Phillies in order in the bottom of the tenth to register the complete-game victory – making him the first 15-game winner in the NL. He gave up the three runs on just four hits – while striking out nine.

Jack Baldschun (4-5) took the loss.
