Friday – July 3
The Phillies moved to San Francisco to begin a three-game series that would lead into the All-Star break. The Giants led the Phillies by a game-and-a-half and had dominated the season series thus far five games to one.
Plus, the Giants were riding a three-game winning series.
On to the Action:
The Phillies took the lead in the top of the third:
- Tony Gonzalez led off with a walk.
- Two outs later, Richie Allen singled to send Gonzalez to third.
- Wes Covington singled to score Gonzalez – Allen stopping at second.
- Clay Dalrymple followed with a single. Allen scored easily – and when rightfielder Jesus Alou kicked the ball around in the outfield, Covington came all the way around from first to score and make it 3-0.
The Giants answered with a run in the bottom half:
- Cap Peterson – pinch-hitting for Ron Herbel – hit a ground ball that Ruben Amaro muffed for his first error of the year.
- Peterson moved to second on a tapper back to the mound.
- Hal Lanier singled to send Peterson to third.
- Willie Mays hit a ground ball to third. Richie Allen gloved it and went for two, but Mays beat the relay to first – Peterson scoring to cut the deficit to 3-1 Phillies.
Culp gave up just one unearned run on six hits through the first seven innings to keep the score at 3-1. Then the Phillies scored single runs in the eighth and ninth.
In the eighth:
- Clay Dalrymple and Tony Taylor
- Ruben Amaro doubled to score Dalrymple.
In the ninth:
- Richie Allen slugged a two-out homer (#16).
From there, Culp (5-6) closed out the Giants to wrap up the opener – with Ron Herbel (6-4) taking the loss.
Around the League: The Phillies win trimmed a full game off the Giants lead and cut the deficit to ½ game.
