1964 July 31

Friday, July 31

The Dodgers came to town for three games – with the Phillies holding a 5-3 edge in the season series. And Chris Short (9-5) took the mound against Joe Moeller (5-9).

Play Ball:

The Phillies took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first:

  • Tony Gonzalez singled.
  • John Herrnstein bunted – Third-baseman Nate Oliver fielded the bunt and forced Gonzalez at second.
  • Johnny Callison a home run (#18).

No more scoring until the Dodgers halved the deficit in the top of the sixth:

  • Maury Wills doubled, moved to third on a ground out, and score when Tommy Davis singled.

The Phillies added a run in the bottom of the seventh:

  • Richie Allen tapped a ball between home and the mound. Ron Perranoski fielded the ball, but his throw pulled Ron Fairly off the bag.
  • Clay Dalrymple sacrificed Allen to second.
  • Perranoski walked Tony Taylor intentionally – to get to Ruben Amaro.
  • But Amaro foiled Walter Alston’s strategy by doubling Allen home to make it 3-1 Phils.

And the Phillies put the game away with three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth:

  • With one out, Tony Gonzalez singled and John Herrnstein walked.
  • Johnny Callison struck out for the second out.

Walter Alston replaced Perranoski with Bob Miller (6-5) – who’d faced the Phillies twice and thrown 11 scoreless innings against them.

  • With Richie Allen at the plate, the runners moved up a base on a passed ball.
  • Miller walked Allen intentionally to load the bases.
  • Then Miller walked Bobby Wine to force home a run and make it 4-1 Phillies.
  • Clay Dalrymple stroked a two-run single to make it 6-1.

Jack Baldschun (4-5) retired the Dodgers 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth to record the save (#13).

Chris Short (10-5) got the win – tying him with Jim Bunning and Art Mahaffey for most wins on the team – and Joe Moeller (5-10) took the loss.
