Sunday – July 5

On to the Action:

After three scoreless innings by both Juan Marichal and Dennis Bennett, the Phillies got to Marichal in the top of the fourth:

  • Johnny Callison and Richie Allen singled.
  • After Wes Covington took a called third-strike, Clay Dalrymple bounced out to second – Callison and Allen moving up to second and third.
  • Tony Taylor singled to score Callison – but Allen was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.

The Phillies added a run in the seventh:

  • Clay Dalrymple walked, moved to second on Tony Taylor’s bunt, and scored on a single by Ruben Amaro to give the Phillies a 2-0 lead.

The Giants spoiled Bennett’s shutout in the bottom half:

  • Jim Ray Hart led off with a home run (#10).

Dennis Bennett (9-4) pitched the first seven innings – giving up one run on six hits – to earn the win. And Jack Baldschun retired all six batters he faced to notch the save (#7).

Juan Marichal (11-4) picked up a tough 2-1 loss.

Around the League: The series sweep by the Phillies made it four straight wins over the Giants – and 4-of-9 in the season series. The sweep also extended the Phillies first-place lead over the Giants to a game-and-a-half.
