1964 June 10

Wednesday – June 10

Chris Short gave up a run to the Pirates in the top of the second inning before taking charge of the game:

  • After getting a pair of ground-outs, Short gave up a double to Bob Bailey.
  • And Bill Mazeroski singled to drive Bailey across the plate to make it 1-0.

1964 imageThe Phillies took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the second – and that’s all they needed:

  • Wes Covington walked, Tony Gonzalez singled, and John Herrnstein reached first on an error to load the bases with nobody out.
  • Clay Dalrymple – batting just .188 – hit a two-run single to give the Phillies a 2-1 lead.

The two runs were all they needed, but they added two more in the fourth:

  • Tony Gonzalez doubled and John Herrnstein followed with a home run (#2) to make it 4-1.

Chris Short was stingy after giving up that run in the second – yielding just two more hits the rest of the way while striking out nine in notching the complete-game victory (4-3).

Bob Friend (4-6) absorbed the loss.

Around the League – The Phillies win – coupled with the Giants’ splitting a doubleheader with the Cardinals – allowed the Phillies to creep within ½ game of first place.
