1964 imageBack to the Action – The Mets took the lead in the top of the first:

  • With one out, Ron Hunt homered (#2) to make it 1-0.

From there, the Phillies took over little by little.

Phillies Second:

  • With one out, Clay Dalrymple doubled and Bobby Wine walked to put runners on first and second.
  • Jim Bunning helped his own cause with a run-scoring single to tie the game 1-1 – Dalrymple scoring and Wine going to third.
  • Cookie Rojas hit a sacrifice fly to take a 2-1 lead.

Phillies Third:

  • Johnny Callison hit a lead-off homer (#5) to up the lead to 3-1.

Phillies Fifth:

  • John Herrnstein and Johnny Callison started with back-to-back singles.
  • After Richie Allen struck out, Tony Gonzalez doubled. Herrnstein scored to make it 4-1 – but Callison was thrown out at the plate 9-6-2.

The Mets scored a single run in the sixth:

  • Jim Hickman homered (#5) with two outs.

Then the Phillies sealed the victory with four runs on five singles in the bottom of the seventh:

  • With one out, reliever Tom Sturdivant gave up back-to-back-to-back singles to John Herrnstein, Johnny Callison, and Richie Allen to load the bases.
  • Tony Gonzalez hit a fly to deep left and everybody moved up a base to make it 5-2 and put runners on second and third.
  • Tony Taylor ripped a two-run single to make it 7-2.
  • Taylor stole second and scored on Clay Dalrymple’s single to bump the lead to 8-2.

Jim Bunning (6-2) finished the game strong to pick up the win. Other than the two home runs, he allowed just three other hits.

Frank Lary (0-1) got his first loss in the National League.


Around the League – The Giants beat the Braves 6-5 to remain deadlocked with the Phillies for first place.
