Tuesday – June 23 – First Game
On to the Action
The three-game series with the Cubs started with a twinight doubleheader.
The Cubs were mired in fifth place with a record of 30-30. And the Cubs and Phillies had already played nine games with the Phillies winning six and the Cubs three.
The first game was a battle of lefthanders:
- Chris Short (5-3) for the Phillies.
- Dick Ellsworth (8-6) for the Cubs.
On to the Action
The Cubs nicked Chris Short for a run in the first:
- Joey Amalfitano led off with a double.
- When he moved to third on a wild pitch, Gene Mauch moved the infield in for a play at the plate.
- After Andre Rodgers struck out, Billy Williams to hit a ground ball to second. Tony Taylor fielded the ball, checked Amalfitano back to third, and threw Williams out at first for the second out.
- Ron Santo walked to make it first and third with two outs.
- Ernie Banks singled to score Williams and give the Cubs a 1-0 lead.
The score remained 1-0 until the Cubs nicked Short for another run in the fourth:
- Ernie Banks and Billy Cowan led off with back-to-back singles.
- Billy Ott followed with a double – Banks scoring and Cowan holding at third.
That ended the scoring at 2-0.
The Phillies never got to Dick Ellsworth (9-6) – who pitched a five-hit shutout to pick up the win. Chris Short (5-4) took the loss.
Tuesday – June 23 – Second Game
On to the Action
The Phillies jumped on 22-year-old rookie right-hander Sterling Slaughter in the bottom of the first:
- Tony Taylor led off with a single and John Herrnstein walked.
- Johnny Callison singled to score Taylor – Herrnstein stopping at second.
- After Richie Allen struck out, Wes Covington singled to score Herrnstein and put the Phillies ahead 2-0 – Callison advancing to third.
With runners on first and third, two outs – and left-handed hitters Tony Gonzalez and Clay Dalrymple on deck – Cubs manager Bob Kennedy replaced Slaughter with lefty Bobby Shantz.
- Tony Gonzalez greeted Shantz with a single to score Callison and make it 3-0.
The Phillies scored twice more in the second:
- With two outs, John Herrnstein doubled to center.
- Johnny Callison singled to score Herrnstein.
- Richie Allen doubled to score Callison and make it 5-0.
Meanwhile, Ray Culp was working on a no-hitter through the first five innings.
And the Phillies added to the lead in the bottom half of the fifth:
- Richie Allen doubled.
- Wes Covington homered (#7) to make it 7-0.
Ray Culp (4-5) lost the no-hitter with one out in the top of the six when Len Gabrielson singled to center – but he kept the shutout intact by retiring the last nine batters to complete a one-hit, complete-game shutout.
Sterling Slaughter (2-2) took the loss.

The Giants split a doubleheader against the Reds to remain a game-and-a-half behind the Phillies.
