On to the Action
In what would become a wild one, the Cubs scored in the top of the first:
- Jimmy Stewart singled and Andre Rodgers walked.
- After Art Mahaffey struck out Billy Williams, Ron Santo singled to score Stewart.
But the Phillies struck hard in the bottom half:
- With one out, John Herrnstein and Johnny Callison hit back-to-back singles – Herrnstein advancing to third.
- Richie Allen cleared the bases with a home run (#14) – the RBIs upping his total to 40.
- Wes Covington doubled and Tony Gonzalez walked.
- Clay Dalrymple singled to score Covington – Gonzalez advancing to third.
- Cookie Rojas beat out a bunt and Gonzalez scored to make it 5-1.
With five runs in – and runners on first and second – manager Bob Kennedy replaced Ernie Broglio with Lew Burdette.
After Burdette retired the Phillies without any further damage, the Cubs started chipping away.
They scored a run in the top of the second:
- Len Gabrielson doubled and moved to third when Jimmie Schaffer flew out to deep right.
- After Art Mahaffey walked Lew Burdette to put runners on first and second, he gave up a single to Jimmy Stewart. And Gabrielson scored to make it 5-2.
After Stewart singled, Art Mahaffey summoned Gene Mauch to the mound. Complaining of tenderness in his pitching arm, Mauch replaced him with Ed Roebuck.
Roebuck retired the two batters he faced in the second – but not so in the top of the third:
- Roebuck walked Ron Santo and gave up a single to Ernie Banks – Santo moving to third.
- Santo scored when Billy Cowan grounded out to short – and the score was 5-3.
And then the Phillies tried to put the game away in the bottom of the third:
- Tony Gonzalez walked and Clay Dalrymple singled – Gonzalez going to third.
- Cookie Rojas singled to score Gonzalez – Dalrymple stopping at second.
- Johnny Briggs – pinch-hitting for Ed Roebuck – singled to move both runners up a base – and load the bases.
Bob Kennedy replaced Lew Burdette with pint-sized lefty Bobby Shantz.
- Tony Taylor greeted Shantz with a two-run single that made it 8-3.
Gene Mauch replaced Ed Roebuck with Dennis Bennett – coming back on three days’ rest after a poor start against the Mets.
But the Cubs had no trouble solving Bennett – scoring three times in the top of the fifth:
- Ernie Banks led off with a home run (#8).
- Billy Cowan and Len Gabrielson hit back-to-back singles – and KO’d Bennett in the process.
- Jack Baldschun replaced Bennett and walked Jimmie Schaffer to load the bases.
- Doug Clemens hit a sacrifice fly to score Billy Cowan and trim the deficit to 8-5.
Baldschun then retired the next two batters to end the rally with the Phillies still on top.
No change in score until the Phillies got a run back in the bottom of the seventh:
With one out, John Herrnstein homered (#4).
With Jack Baldschun on the mound, the 9-5 lead looked safe – but the Cubs rallied in the top of the eighth:
- Billy Ott walked and Jimmy Stewart singled.
- After Andre Rodgers struck out, Billy Williams cleared the rightfield wall (#18) to trim the Phillies lead to 9-8 – and giving him 42 RBIs.
After Ron Santo struck out for the second out, Ernie Banks and Billy Cowan hit back-to-back singles to put the tying and winning runs on first and second with two outs.
Gene Mauch replaced Baldschun with Dallas Green – and Green ended the inning by getting Len Gabrielson to ground out to Cookie Rojas.
After retiring the Cubs 1-2-3 in the ninth, Dallas Green (2-1) got the win – rather than Jack Baldschun.
The Official Scorer awarded the win to Green because he retired all five batters he faced – while Baldschun allowed three runs on five hits.
Ernie Broglio (3-7) took the loss.
The win gave the Phillies and 8-4 edge in the season series with the Cubs.
