Back to the Action – Aces Jim Bunning and Don Drysdale locked up in a scoreless pitcher’s duel thru the first ten innings – Bunning giving up eight hits and Drysdale just three.

With a runner on first and one out in the bottom of the tenth, Gene Mauch lifted Bunning for pinch-hitter Roy Sievers. After Sievers grounded into an inning-ending double play, Mauch made a double switch in the top of the eleventh:

  1. Gus Triandos came in to catch – batting eighth and replacing Tony Taylor who’d come in to pinch-run for Clay Dalrymple.
  2. Jack Baldschun came in to pitch – batting ninth.

After getting into a bases-loaded jam with two outs, Baldschun got Tommy Davis to ground into an unassisted force at third to end the threat

And then the Phillies won it in the bottom of eleven:

  • Cookie Rojas doubled to left.
  • After Drysdale struck out Richie Allen for the first out – and with a string of left-handed batters coming up – Dodgers manager Walter Alston replaced Drysdale with lefty Ron Perranoski.
  • To set up a potential double play, Perranoski walked Johnny Callison intentionally.
  • Wes Covington hit a ground ball to first. Ron Fairly fielded the grounder, threw to Maury Wills covering second to force Callison, but Covington beat the relay back to first – Rojas moving to third.
  • With first and third and two outs, Perranoski got Tony Gonzalez to hit a ground ball to third that should’ve been the third out. But Jim Gilliam bobbled the ball and Rojas scored to give the Phillies a walk-off 1-0 win.

Jim Bunning pitched ten shutout innings – giving up eight hits and striking out seven – yet he didn’t get the win. The win went to Jack Baldschun (3-1) – who pitched a scoreless eleventh.

Don Drysdale (6-5) pitched even better than Bunning – giving up one earned run on four hits while fanning ten – but he was tagged with the loss.

The winning streak for the Phillies reached five.

Around the LeagueRon Herbel (3-1) and the Giants shutout the Pirates 3-0 to remain in second place – 1½ games behind the Phillies.
