1964 May 10

Sunday – May 10

Chris Short (0-1) pitched well in his first start – striking out 11 while giving up six hits and two runs. Just one run was earned – so his ERA remained a sparkling 0.66.

  • In the fourth inning, Short gave up a run after striking out the first three batters because Gus Triandos let a strike-three get thru him and roll to the backstop. Short then walked Tommy Harper and yielded a run-scoring single to Leo Cardenas that gave the Reds a 1-0 lead.
  • In the eighth, he gave up another run. After striking out the first two batters in the eighth, he gave up a single to Deron Johnson and a run-scoring double to Frank Robinson to make it 2-0 Reds.

1964 imageShort (0-1) pitched well – but Joe Nuxhall (2-2) was better – throwing a four-hit shutout while striking out eight to even his record.

Around the League – The Giants lost to the Dodgers 9-1 – with Don Drysdale (4-1) once again besting Jack Sanford (3-3). But the Giants retained possession of first place by one game because the Phillies also lost.

1964 – The Year the Phillies Blew the Pennant was originally published two years ago – but please don’t purchase it right now. I’m in the final stages of streamlining the original to make it a better reading experience.

I’ll let you know when it’s ready.
