1964 May 16

Saturday – May 16

Trailing 1-0 entering the bottom of the third, the Colt 45s took the lead in the bottom half of the inning:

  • Eddie Kasko reached first on Richie Allen’s error, moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Nellie Fox, and scored when Al Spangler tripled to tie the game 1-1.
  • Spangler scored on Walt Bond’s sacrifice fly to make it 2-1.

1964 imageTurk Farrell retired the Phillies in the fourth and the fifth – and then helped his own cause in the bottom of the fifth:

  • Farrell singled and moved to second on Eddie Kasko’s bunt.
  • Nellie Fox flew out to center for the second out.
  • When Al Spangler singled to right, Turk Farrell rounded third and took a wide turn toward home – but then hit the brakes. And good thing for him because Johnny Callison threw a strike to the plate that would’ve nailed him. Spangler moved up to second on the throw to the plate to put runners on second and third with two outs.
  • Walt Bond made it three RBIs on the day with a two-run single that made it 4-1.

The Phillies added a single run in the sixth and rallied to score another in the ninth to close the gap to 4-3. But Hal Woodeshick came in to get the last two outs and pick up the save (#7).

Around the League – The Giants beat the Mets 6-4 in 15 innings to flip-flop with the Phillies and take over first place by ½ game.
