1964 imageJim Bunning pitched a one-hitter in making it two straight shutouts over the Colt 45s – this one 4-0. The only hit was a single by Jim Wynn leading off the bottom of the fifth.

The Phillies scored one in the fourth, two in the fifth, and one in the seventh.

Phillies fourth:

  • Wes Covington and John Herrnstein led off with back-to-back singles.
  • One out later, Bobby Wine singled and Covington scored to make it 1-0.

Phillies fifth:

  • Richie Allen doubled with one out and scored when Johnny Callison followed with a single to put the Phillies ahead 2-0.
  • Tony Gonzalez followed with a double of his own and Callison scored from first to make it 3-0 – Gonzalez’ 17th RBI.

Phillies seventh:

  • Richie Allen singled with one out.
  • After Johnny Callison forced Allen at second, Tony Gonzalez chased Callison home with a two-out double to make it 4-0 Phillies – his 18th RBI.

Jim Bunning (5-1) picked up the win and Ken Johnson (3-4) took the loss.

Around the League – The Mets beat the Giants 4-2 behind Galen Cisco’s (2-3) four-hitter – with Larry Bearnarth picking up a two-inning save (#2).

Bob Shaw (3-2) – the third of five pitchers used by Alvin Dark – took the loss.

The Giants (19-11) and Phillies (18-10) were in a virtual tie for first place – with the Phillies moving to San Francisco to begin a three-game series with the Giants.
