MONDAY – MAY 18
The Phillies moved to San Francisco to begin a three-game series with the Giants with first place was at stake.
Dennis Bennett (4-2) was facing Jack Sanford (3-3) in the series opener.
Back to the Action – Jack Sanford surrendered just four hits as the Phillies started the West Coast swing on the wrong side of a 3-0 shutout.
Sanford and Bennett traded goose eggs for six innings before the Giants hit the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh:
- Jim Ray Hart led off with a single, moved to second on a bunt by Jim Davenport, and scored on a single by Del Crandall to make it 1-0.
- One out later, Jack Sanford singled. Crandall was going to stop at third, but Wes Covington bobbled the pickup in left and Crandall scored to bump the lead to 2-0.
After Sanford tossed another scoreless frame in the top of the eighth, the Giants added an insurance room in the bottom of the eighth:
- Willie Mays walked with one out and scored on Jim Ray Hart’s double to end the scoring at 3-0.
Sanford (4-3) completed the four-hitter in one-two-three style by striking out the last two Phillies he faced.
Bennett (4-3) pitched a complete game in taking the loss.
Around the League – The Giants took a one-game lead over the Phils.
