The Phillies got started in the top of the first:

  • Richie Allen hit a two-run homer (#9).

But the Giants answered right back in the bottom:

  • Willie Mays hit a two-run shot (#15) of his own to knot the score at 2-2.

The Phillies played small-ball in the third:

  • Richie Allen led off with a single.
  • Trying to sacrifice, Danny Cater laid down a bunt – but he beat it out for a base hit.
  • Allen tagged and moved to third on a long fly by Gus Triandos – and he tagged and scored on a deep fly by Tony Gonzalez to make it 3-2.
  • Wes Covington and Bobby Wine followed with singles. Cater scored and it was 4-2 Phillies.

After starter Bob Hendley walked Rick Wise to load the bases, Al Dark replaced Hendley with Gaylord Perry – who retired Tony Taylor to end the inning.

But the bottom dropped out for Culp in the bottom of the fourth:

  • Willie Mays walked and advance to third on Willie McCovey’s single.

Even with the Phillies leading 4-2, Gene Mauch lifted Rick Wise in favor of Ed Roebuck (1-0). Roebuck had yet to give up a run in eight outings.

  • Roebuck got what he was looking for when Cepeda hit a double-play ball to short – but the sure-handed Bobby Wine booted it and Willie Mays scored to close the gap to 4-3.
  • Trying to sacrifice, Jim Davenport beat out a bunt to load the bases.
  • José Pagan singled, the runners moved up a base, and McCovey scored to tie the game 4-4.

To start the bottom of the fifth, Gene Mauch replaced Roebuck with Johnny Klippstein (2-0) – who had an ERA of 1.93 in six games.

But the Giants got to Klippstein:

  • After two quick ground outs, Willie Mays hit a solo shot (#16).
  • Orlando Cepeda followed with a two-run shot (#3) o make it 7-4 Giants.
  • Jim Davenport singled and José Pagan doubled.

Gene Mauch replaced Klippstein with Ray Culp – but Culp was wild:

  • Culp walked Del Crandall intentionally to get to pitcher Bobby Bolin.
  • But then Culp walked Bolin to force in a run and make it 8-4.

1964 imageAfter a scoreless sixth, the Giants added another run in the seventh when the wildness continued:

  • Culp walked Cepeda.
  • Culp walked Crandall intentionally.
  • Culp walked Bolin to load the bases.
  • Culp hit Chuck Hiller to force in a run and end the scoring with the Giants on top 9-4.

Bobby Bolin (1-1) shut out the Phillies on one hit over the final six innings to pick up the win.

Johnny Klippstein (2-1) was tagged with the loss.

Around the League – By winning the series two games to one, the Giants took possession of first place by one game – the Phillies dropping into a second-place tie with the Cardinals.
