Saturday – May 23
The crowd of 42,349 for the second game of the series was 3,000 more than the previous night.
Back to the Action – Dennis Bennett gave up 11 hits – but just two runs over 13 innings – as the Phillies beat the Dodgers 4-2 in 14 innings.
The Phillies broke on top in the third:
- After Dodgers starter Phil Ortega got the first two outs, Richie Allen and Johnny Callison hit back-to-back doubles to make it 1-0.
The Dodgers answered in the bottom of the third:
- Dick Tracewski led off with a home run (#1) to tie the game 1-1.
- Willie Davis singled and moved to second on Phil Ortega’s sacrifice bunt.
- One out later, Junior Gilliam lined a single to right to score Davis and make it 2-1 Dodgers.
The Phillies added a run in the sixth:
- Wes Covington’s lead-off homer (#5) tied the game 2-2.
The score remained tied at 2-2 from the bottom of the sixth thru the bottom of the 13th inning.
The Phillies untied things in the top of the 14th inning:
- Gene Mauch sent Cookie Rojas up to pinch-hit for Bennett. Rojas walked and moved to second when Tony Taylor bunted.
- Richie Allen singled – but Rojas had to stop at third.
- Johnny Callison singled to score Rojas easily and put the Phillies ahead 3-2. With Allen heading for third, left-fielder Tommy Davis fielded the ball and thought he had a shot at getting Allen at third. So he came up throwing – but Allen slid under the tag at third and Callison took second on the throw.
- After Danny Cater struck out for the second out, Tony Gonzalez hit a ground ball to third that should’ve been the third out. But Junior Gilliam booted it for an error – allowing Allen to score an insurance run to make it 4-2 Phillies.
Gene Mauch brought Jack Baldschun in to close out the game and Baldschun got the Dodgers one-two-three in the bottom of the 14th to earn the save (#3).
Dennis Bennett struck out eight while picking up the win (5-3).
Ron Perranoski – who pitched the 13th and 14th – took the loss.
Around the League – The Giants lost to the Pirates 9-2 – allowing the Phillies to pull into a tie for first-place.
Meanwhile in Milwaukee, the Cardinals lost to the Braves 8-4 to remain in second place – one game behind.
