Friday – May 29
Back to the Action – The Phillies were holding a 5-1 lead after seven innings on the strength of Jim Bunning’s two-hitter – and some timely hitting.
The Phils broke the ice in the bottom of the first:
- Cookie Rojas singled and Richie Allen bunted for a base hit.
- Two outs later, Tony Gonzalez tripled to take a 2-0 lead.
They added to the lead in the bottom of the fifth:
- An error and singles by Richie Allen and Johnny Callison loaded the bases.
- Wes Covington hit a two-run single to make it 4-0.
And padded the lead in the sixth:
- Clay Dalrymple singled and moved to second on a wild pitch.
- Two outs later, Cookie Rojas singled Dalrymple home and it was 5-0.
But Bunning gave up a run in the top of the seventh:
- With two outs, Mike White doubled.
- Walt Bond drove him home with a single to end the shutout at 5-1.
Bunning weakened in the top of the eighth – and the Colt 45s took the lead:
- Rusty Staub walked.
- Dave Roberts singled – and then all hell started to break loose against Bunning.
- John Bateman hit a routine fly ball to right, but Johnny Callison dropped it for an error – Staub scoring to cut the deficit to 5-2. Roberts advanced to third and Bateman to second.
- Eddie Kasko singled both runners home to cut the deficit to 5-4.
- After Bunning got two outs on fly balls, Nellie Fox tripled to tie the score 5-5.
- Mike White doubled to put the Colt 45s in front 6-5.
Mauch replaced Bunning with Dennis Bennett – who’d started the day before but hadn’t made it thru the third inning. And Bennett got a ground ball to end the inning.
Colt 45s manager Harry Craft sent Hal Woodeshick out to pitch the bottom of the eighth – and the Phillies jumped on him:
- Danny Cater pinch-hit for John Herrnstein and singled.
- Tony Taylor pinch-hit for Clay Dalrymple. Just one run down, Gene Mauch called for a sacrifice and the strategy succeeded as Taylor got the bunt down and Cater moved into scoring position.
- Cater held second when Ruben Amaro grounded out for the second out.
- Gus Triandos pinch-hit for Dennis Bennett and doubled to tie the game 6-6.
- Cookie Rojas hit a line drive over Rusty Staub’s head in center-field and wound up on third with a triple – Triandos scoring to put the Phillies on top 7-6. The triple gave Rojas 11 hits in 16 trips since Mauch started penciling his name into the starting lineup three days earlier – two doubles, a triple, and a home run to go along with seven singles. The triple upped Rojas’ batting average to .565.
To begin the ninth, Gene Mauch made a triple-switch:
- Ed Roebuck came in to pitch, batting seventh.
- Gus Triandos stayed in to catch, batting ninth.
- Danny Cater moved into left field, batting sixth.
Roebuck closed the game with a one-two-three ninth inning – he’d yet to give up a run in 12 innings over 11 games.
Dennis Bennett (6-3) picked up the win in relief and Roebuck earned the save (#5).
Hal Woodeshick (1-3) took the loss.
Around the League – The Giants lost to the Mets 4-2 in front of 55,062 at Shea Stadium – Tracy Stallard (3-6) besting Jack Sanford (4-5) – and the Phillies eased back into a tie with the Giants for first place.
