Sunday – May 3
Hank Fischer’s two-hitter was two hits better than Art Mahaffey’s four-hitter in a 1-0 pitcher’s duel that gave the rubber game of the series to the Braves.
The game’s lone run came in the second:
- With one out, Joe Torre doubled.
- Frank Bolling followed with a fly ball to deep right – deep enough to allow Torre to tag and advance to third.
- Mahaffey walked Denis Menke intentionally to get to the pitcher and set up the possibility of a double play.
- But the strategy failed when Fischer singled up the middle to score Torre and make it 1-0 Braves.
Hank Fischer (3-0) earned the well-pitched victory.
Art Mahaffey (1-1) deserved better – giving up one run on just four hits in seven innings – yet took the loss.
Around the League – The Giants made it two-of-three from the Dodgers with a 6-3 win in front of 52,309 fans at Dodger Stadium. The win – coupled with the Phillies loss – enabled the Giants to pull into a tie for first place with the Phillies. Both teams with 10-4 records.
1964 – The Year the Phillies Blew the Pennant was originally published two years ago – but please don’t purchase it right now. I’m in the final stages of streamlining the original to make it a better reading experience.
I’ll let you know when it’s ready.
