1964 IMAGEChris Short pitched a six-hitter as the Phillies beat the Colt 45s.

The teams traded runs in the second.

Colt 45s second inning:

  • Walt Bond singled.
  • Bob Aspromonte doubled to send Bond to third.
  • John Bateman hit a sacrifice fly that made it 1-0.

The Phillies second inning:

  • Tony Gonzalez singled – but was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double.
  • John Herrnstein tripled and scored on Clay Dalrymple’s sac-fly to tie it up 1-1.

The Phillies took the lead in the bottom of the seventh:

  • Tony Gonzalez walked.
  • One out later, Clay Dalrymple singled to send Gonzalez to third.
  • Ruben Amaro executed the suicide squeeze to give the Phillies a 2-1 lead.

The Phillies put the game away in the eighth:

  • With one out, Richie Allen singled.
  • Johnny Callison lined a ball into the right-field corner and Allen scored easily from first. But as Callison rounded second and headed for third, Walt Bond fished the ball out of the corner. He made a strong throw toward the infield, but cutoff man Dave Roberts couldn’t handle the throw and Callison scored when the ball trickled away from Roberts. It was Callison’s third triple of the season and gave the Phillies a 4-1 lead.
  • Wes Covington homered (#6) to make it 5-1.

Chris Short (3-2) picked up the complete-game victory – which made it two wins in a row for the Phillies – and winless Don Nottebart (0-7) took the loss.

Around the League – The Giants lost to the Mets 6-2 – second straight loss – as Jack Fisher (3-3) topped Ron Herbel (2-1). The loss allowed the Phillies to edge into first place by one game.
