1964 May 9

Saturday – May 9

1964 imageDallas Green (1-0) relieved starter Jim Bunning in the top of the sixth with the Phillies trailing 4-2. From there, he pitched two scoreless innings to take the game up to the seventh-inning stretch. In all, Green had yet to give up a run in five relief appearances.

And then the Phillies rallied to take the lead:

  • With one out, Roy Sievers pinch-hit for Dallas Green, but grounded out for the second out.
  • Tony Taylor walked to keep the inning alive.
  • Richie Allen singled.
  • Johnny Callison doubled and Taylor scored to close the gap to 4-3 – Callison’s 12th RBI of the year – Allen stopping at third.

Reds manager Fred Hutchinson replaced starter Bob Purkey with lefty Bill Henry (1-0). This was Henry’s fourth outing and he’d given up just one run in 6 1/3 innings to this point – but that would soon change.

  • Tony Gonzalez greeted Henry with a two-run single to put the Phillies ahead 5-4 – giving Gonzalez 16 RBIs on the season.

Gene Mauch replaced Green with Ed Roebuck in the top of the eighth and Roebuck retired six of the seven hitters he faced to notch his third save.

Reds starter Bob Purkey (0-2) took the loss.

The victory gave the Phillies four straight wins – as well as four straight over the Reds.

Around the League – The Giants beat the Dodgers 3-2 to retain their one-game lead over the Phillies.

1964 – The Year the Phillies Blew the Pennant was originally published two years ago – but please don’t purchase it right now. I’m in the final stages of streamlining the original to make it a better reading experience.

I’ll let you know when it’s ready.
