1964 May 5

Tuesday – May 5

Ace Jim Bunning (3-0) – coming off three straight wins – faced Ray Washburn (0-0) on getaway day to end the two-game series with the Cardinals – along with ending the seven-game road trip.

1964 imageRay Washburn was a 26-year-old rookie making his first big-league start after being promoted from the AAA Jacksonville Suns. Washburn had pitched a 1-0 complete-game shutout in his only appearance for the Suns.

Back to the Action – The game remained scoreless going into the bottom of the fifth:

  • Johnny Lewis led off with a double.
  • Phil Gagliano followed with a single and Lewis scored to put the Cards on top 1-0.
  • After Bunning struck out Washburn for the first out, Curt Flood singled to put runners on first and second.
  • After Bunning got Dick Groat on a liner for the second out, he gave up a single to Bill White that scored Gagliano to make it 2-0 Cards.

The Phillies only run scored when Tony Gonzalez hit a two-out solo-shot (#2) in the top of the eighth.

Ray Washburn (1-0) picked up the impressive 2-1 win in his first big-league start and Ron Taylor earned his first save.

Jim Bunning (3-1) was tagged with his first loss – the fourth straight loss for the Phillies.

Around the League – The Giants beat the Colt 45s again. The loss dropped the Phillies into third place ─ two games behind the first-place Giants and one game behind the second-place Braves.

1964 – The Year the Phillies Blew the Pennant was originally published two years ago – but please don’t purchase it right now. I’m in the final stages of streamlining the original to make it a better reading experience.

I’ll let you know when it’s ready.
