Friday – May 8
The Reds came to town for three games after splitting two games with the Mets. The Phillies, on the other hand, had swept both games on the recent trip to Milwaukee.
In the first game of this series, the Phillies bats erupted for 18 hits to power Dennis Bennett (3-2) to an easy 11-3 victory over the Reds:
- Johnny Callison went 4-for-4 with a single, double, two triples, three runs scored, and an RBI.
- Tony Taylor, Clay Dalrymple, and Wes Covington had three hits each – with Covington racking up five RBIs.
Leading 3-2 in the middle of the fourth, Covington hit a three-run (#3) homer to expand the lead to 6-2. In the eighth, the Phillies packaged four singles, a triple, and a hit-batsman to produce four more runs.
Bennett yielded just four hits in the complete-game win as the Phils extended their winning streak to three games.
John Tsitouris (1-2) took the loss.
Around the League – The Giants shut out the Dodgers 3-0 behind a five-hit performance by Juan Marichal (5-0). The win allowed the Giants to maintain their one-game lead over the Phillies.
1964 – The Year the Phillies Blew the Pennant was originally published two years ago – but please don’t purchase it right now. I’m in the final stages of streamlining the original to make it a better reading experience.
I’ll let you know when it’s ready.
