Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev and Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser set off dynamite charges to divert the flow of the Nile River and allow construction of the Aswan High Dam.

Khrushchev called the project the “Eighth Wonder of the World.”

jim bunning imageBack to the ActionJim Bunning (4-1) pitched seven strong innings – two runs on seven hits while striking out eight – to pick up the win and end the Phillies losing streak at three games. He needed the help of a two-inning save by Ed Roebuck (#4) to seal the 3-2 victory over Ernie Broglio (2-2) and the Cardinals.

After four scoreless innings, the Cards scored two runs in the first:

  • Bunning hit Curt Flood.
  • Doug Clemens tripled to make it 1-0 Cards.
  • After Dick Groat popped out to short for the second out, Bill White singled to make it 2-0 Cardinals.

  • Tony Taylor and Richie Allen stroked back-to-back singles.
  • Johnny Callison hit a ground ball to short. Dick Groat tried to get two, but Callison beat Julian Javier’s relay to first to put runners on first and third with one out.
  • Wes Covington hit a ground ball that handcuffed first-baseman Bill White – who recovered in time to get Covington at first, but Taylor scored to put the Phillies on the scoreboard 2-1. Callison reached second.
  • John Herrnstein singled Callison across the plate to tie the game 2-2.

And Richie Allen hit the game-winning home run (#7) in the bottom of the seventh – his 15th RBI.

Around the League – When the Giants lost 4-3 to the Colt 45s, the Phillies climbed back to within ½ game of first place.
