Sunday – May 24
Dodgers ace Sandy Koufax came on in relief in the top of the seventh to throw a three-inning save in the 3-0 shutout of the Phillies – in between starts:
- Koufax had pitched a complete-game 4-3 win over the Mets three days earlier.
- And apparently the extra work didn’t hurt his performance because he would take his regular turn three days later – giving up just three hits while striking out seven – yet losing 1-0 to the Reds.
By the way, he finished the season with a 19-5 record and a 1.74 ERA.
Back to the action – The Dodgers picked up single runs in the second and third innings against Jim Bunning.
Second inning:
- The Dodgers packaged a single by Frank Howard, a double by Wes Parker, and a single by Dick Tracewski to take a 1-0 lead.
Third inning:
- Tommy Davis hit a one-out home run (#3) to up the lead to 2-0.
And the Dodgers added a single run in the eighth:
- Ron Fairly singled with two outs and scored on Wes Parker’s triple to end the scoring at 3-0.
The Phillies managed just three hits off starter Joe Moeller in his six innings of work and added just one more hit off Koufax in his three innings of relief. Moeller got the win (2-3) and Koufax the save (#1).
Bunning (5-2) took the loss.
The game was played in front of 36,900 fans ─ which meant 118,169 fans saw all three games at Dodgers Stadium.
Around the League – The Pirates swept a doubleheader from the Giants – 3-0 and 5-3 – allowing the Phillies to take over undisputed possession of first place by ½ game over the Giants.
The Cardinals lost and dropped into third place – ½ game behind the Giants and one game behind the Phillies.
