After being no-hit by Sandy Koufax on Thursday night, the Phillies were beginning a three-game weekend series with the Giants. Yes, it was still early in the season, but this was a showdown for first place.

Art Mahaffey (4-2) versus Juan Marichal (8-1) in the series opener in front of 31,774 fans – some 2,000 more than the night before.

Back to the Action – The Phillies took the lead with single runs in the first and third innings.

Phillies First:

• Cookie Rojas doubled, moved to third on a passed ball, and scored on Richie Allen’s sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.

Phillies Third:

• Cookie Rojas and Richie Allen opened the inning with doubles and it was 2-0.

After the Giants tied the score in the top of the fifth:

• With one out, Art Mahaffey walked pitcher Juan Marichal and lead-off hitter Chuck Hiller.
• Willie McCovey’s two-run double tied the score 2-2.

The Phillies regained the lead in the bottom half with some interesting small-ball:

• Cookie Rojas reached first on an error.
• After Richie Allen struck out, Johnny Callison doubled to put runners on second and third.
• Alvin Dark ordered Juan Marichal to walk Wes Covington intentionally to load the bases.
• Tony Gonzalez hit a fly ball to deep center – so deep that Rojas scored easily to take the lead at 3-2. But it was so deep that Callison tagged and tried to score from second – but Callison was thrown out at the plate Willie Mays-to-Juan Marichal-to-Tom Haller to end the inning.

But the Giants tied it back up in the top of the eighth:

• Orlando Cepeda led off with a home run (#6) to make it 3-3.

The ninth inning ended with the score tied 3-3 and the game moved into extra innings with Jack Baldschun on the mound for the Phillies – the third pitcher used by Gene Mauch – and Ken McKenzie on the mound for the Giants – the fourth pitcher used by Alvin Dark.

After a scoreless tenth, the Giants scored in the top of the eleventh:

• Tom Haller walked and moved into scoring position on a bunt by Jim Davenport.
• Baldschun struck out Jim Ray Hart for the second out.
• Alvin Dark sent Harvey Kuenn up to pinch-hit for Bob Shaw – the fifth pitcher used by Dark. Kuenn – a former American League batting champion who hit .353 in 1959 with the Detroit Tigers – was hitting only .186 after his first 59 at-bats. But Kuenn came through with a single that scored Haller to make it 4-3.
• With a runner on first and two outs, light-hitting Chuck Hiller tripled in an insurance run to up the lead to 5-3.

Alvin Dark brought starter Ron Herbel (3-1) in to pitch the bottom of the eleventh. The move was odd by today’s standards because Herbel pitched a four-hit, complete-game shutout just two days earlier against the Pirates.

The Phillies rallied when Bobby Wine and pinch-hitter Johnny Briggs hit back-to-back singles. But the rally fell short when Gus Triandos popped a bunt to first and Cookie Rojas grounded into a 4-6-3 double-play to end the ball game.

Bob Shaw (4-3) picked up the win, Ron Herbel earned the save (#1), and Jack Baldschun (3-2) took the loss.

It was the Phillies second consecutive loss and the third win for the Giants in their last four games.

Around the League – The outcome enabled the Giants to pull within ½ game of the Phillies.
