The Giants made it two straight over the Phillies.
The Phillies took the lead in the bottom of the second:
- Wes Covington doubled and moved to third on Tony Gonzalez’ single.
- Covington scored on John Herrnstein’s sacrifice fly to give the Phils a 1-0 lead.
But the Giants tied it up in the fourth – and took the lead in the seventh.
Giants Fourth:
- Orlando Cepeda singled with one out and scored when Jim Ray Hart followed with a triple.
Giants Seventh:
- Jesus Alou led off with a home run (#1) to take a 2-1 lead.
The Phillies caught the Giants in the eighth:
- Cookie Rojas led off with a double and scored on Richie Allen’s single to tie things up 2-2.
But the Giants won it in the top of the ninth:
- Tom Haller – a .208 hitter – hit a two-run homer (#4) to give the Giants a 4-2 lead.
It was the first home run – and the first runs – allowed by Ed Roebuck (1-1) all season. Unfortunately, it put him on the hook for the loss.
Billy O’Dell (1-1) retired the Phillies in order in the bottom of the ninth to pick up the victory in relief.
It was the Phillies third straight loss – second straight to the Giants – and their fourth loss in five games with the Giants.
Around the League – Thus, the Phillies and Giants flip-flopped in the standings and dropped the Phillies into second place – trailing the Giants by ½ game.
