A group of 1,000 college students from the North gathered for training in Oxford, Ohio. Termed “Freedom Summer,” the group’s objective was to travel to Mississippi to educate local blacks about the political process and to help them register to vote.

They called themselves “Freedom Riders.”

Sunday – June 14 – First Game

Back to the Action – The Phillies won the first game of the doubleheader on Flag Day with a 9-5 see-saw battle:

  • The Phils scored a run in the first when Johnny Briggs walked, stole second, and scored on Johnny Callison’s double.
  • They added two runs in the third on Richie Allen’s round tripper (#13) – RBIs #33 and #34.

But then the Mets took over the lead in the top of the fourth:

  • Chris Short lost his shutout bid when Ed Kranepool led off with a home run (#2) to cut the Phillies lead to 3-1 – and that was just the beginning of the end for Short.
  • Short walked Ron Hunt.
  • Joe Christopher singled to move Hunt to third.
  • Charley Smith doubled to score Hunt and trim the deficit to 3-2 – with Christopher advancing to third.
  • After Dick Smith struck out for the first out, Roy MacMillan singled and Christopher scored to tie the game 3-3 – with Charley Smith moving to third.
  • After Chris Cannizzaro struck out for the second out, Galen Cisco doubled and Charley Smith scored to put the Mets ahead 4-3. Roy MacMillan also tried to score, but was thrown out at the plate 8-4-2 to end the inning.

The Phils answered back in the bottom of the fourth:

  • Tony Taylor led off with a single and moved to second when Clay Dalrymple bunted him along.
  • Following a fast ball to Bobby Wine, catcher Chris Cannizzaro tried to pick Taylor off at second. But Cannizzaro’s throw bounced in front of the bag and trickled into the outfield – allowing Taylor to advance to third.
  • Bobby Wine walked to put runners on first and third.
  • Wes Covington pinch-hit for Chris Short and walked to load the bases. Gene Mauch sent Cookie Rojas in to pinch-run for Covington.
  • Johnny Briggs recorded his first two big-league RBIs when he lined a single to right that put the Phillies back on top 5-4. Rojas advanced to third to make it first and third with one out.

Casey Stengel replaced Galen Cisco with Larry Bearnarth and he got John Herrnstein to ground out to second – but Rojas scored to make it 6-4 Phillies.

And the Phillies put the game away in the bottom of the seventh:

  • Richie Allen and Tony Gonzalez hit back-to-back singles.
  • Tony Taylor tripled – his first of the season – to send Allen and Gonzalez across the plate. And when second-baseman Ron Hunt botched the relay throw from the outfield, Taylor also scored to make it 9-4 Phils.

Ray Culp (2-5) – who relieved Chris Short to start the top of the fifth – gave up just one run on three hits in four innings of work in picking up the win.

Galen Cisco (3-7) took the loss.

Sunday – June 14 – Second Game

The Phillies swept the doubleheader with a 4-2 win in the second game.

The Phillies took the lead on a two-run shot (#6) by Johnny Callison in the bottom of the first – and added a run in the fifth on an RBI single by Cookie Rojas.

Leading 3-0 and having given up just three hits, Art Mahaffey ran into trouble in the top of the seventh:

  • With one out, Amado Samuel singled.
  • Mahaffey struck out Hawk Taylor – who was pinch-hitting for Al Jackson – for the second out.
  • Then Jim Hickman cracked his sixth home run to cut the Phillies lead to 3-2.

Gene Mauch lifted Art Mahaffey and brought in Ed Roebuck  – who had a 1.09 ERA with eight saves.

Roebuck gave up a single, but got out of the inning unscathed.

The Phils closed the scoring at 4-2 with a run in the bottom of the seventh on another RBI single by Cookie Rojas.

Art Mahaffey (6-2) picked up the win and Ed Roebuck earned the save (#9).

Al Jackson (3-9) took the loss.

That was three straight wins for the Phillies, three straight against the Mets, and 5-of-6 versus the Mets.

Around the League – The Giants beat the Reds 8-2 – but sweeping the doubleheader meant that the Phillies picked up ½ game on the Giants to take over first place by ½ game.
