1964 imageAfter losing the first game of the series the day before, the Phillies jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first:

  • Tony Taylor led off with a routine fly to left – but Walt Bond dropped the ball and Taylor wound up on second.
  • Richie Allen singled to score Taylor.
  • Johnny Callison lifted a routine fly to right – but Joe Gaines dropped the ball for the second error of the inning.
  • Wes Covington drew a walk to load the bases.
  • John Herrnstein singled and everyone moved up a base – Allen scoring to up the lead to 2-0.
  • Clay Dalrymple hit a sacrifice fly to deep center – the runners moving up a base with Callison
  • With runners on second and third, both runners held their ground when Cookie Rojas grounded out for the second out.
  • Ken Johnson walked Bobby Wine intentionally to get to Jim Bunning – but Bunning crossed up the strategy with a two-run single to make it 5-0.

The Colts 45s got on the scoreboard in the second:

  • Joe Gaines walked and moved to second on Rusty Staub’s single.
  • One out later, Jerry Grote singled to score Gaines and trim the deficit to 5-1.

But the Phillies came back with three more runs in the third:

  • John Herrnstein greeted reliever Don Larsen with a single.
  • Clay Dalrymple doubled to score Herrnstein from first.
  • Cookie Rojas grounded out – Dalrymple moving to third.
  • Bobby Wine singled to score Dalrymple and make it 7-1.
  • With just one out, Gene Mauch had Bunning sacrifice Wine to second.
  • And the strategy paid off when Tony Taylor singled to score Wine and make it 8-1.

That was it for the scoring as Jim Bunning (8-2) shut out the Colt 45s the rest of the way on two hits to pick up the win with his sixth complete game of the year.

Ken Johnson (6-7) took the loss.

The win broke a two-game losing streak and gave the Phillies a 7-2 advantage in the first nine games with the Colt 45s.
