Play Ball:

  • With one out, Vada Pinson and Frank Robinson singled.
  • One out later, Johnny Edwards singled to score Pinson – Robinson stopping at second.
  • Leo Cardenas hit a ball off the scoreboard that scored both Robinson and Edwards and bumped the lead to 3-0 – but Johnny Callison gunned down Cardenas trying to stretch the double into a triple to end the inning.

1964 imageIn the sixth and seventh innings, Joe Nuxhall retired the Phillies in order, but he ran out of gas in the process.

Reds manager Freddie Hutchinson replaced Nuxhall by summoning Sammy Ellis (4-2) from the bullpen for the bottom of the eighth.

Ellis ran into trouble in the eighth, but he pitched his way out. He also ran into trouble in the bottom of the ninth – but this time he encountered difficulty pitching his way out:

  • With one out, Ellis walked Cookie Rojas.
  • Richie Allen tripled to score Rojas and put the Phillies on the scoreboard at 3-1.

But Ellis finally put out the fire by striking out John Herrnstein and Roy Sievers to pick up the save (#2).

Joe Nuxhall (7-4) got the win and Jim Bunning (9-3) the loss.

Around the League:

The Giants blanked the Cubs 7-0 behind Bobby Bolin’s (3-3) seven-hit, 12-strike-out shutout. That win flip-flopped the Giants into a ½-game lead over the Phillies for first place.
