Play Ball:

The Phillies took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first:

  • Cookie Rojas walked and moved to second on Johnny Callison’s bunt.
  • With a nifty move, Joe Nuxhall picked Rojas off second – but Nuxhall’s throw bounced in front of the bag and rolled far enough away for Rojas to take third.
  • Tony Taylor hit a sacrifice fly to score Rojas.

No change in score until the Phillies fifth:

  • With one out, Cookie Rojas walked and moved to second on Johnny Callison’s single.
  • Tony Taylor singled to score Rojas and make it 2-0.

The Reds tied it at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth:

  • When Steve Boros tried to bunt his way on, Dennis Bennett fielded the ball. But he overthrew first and Boros was awarded second when the ball bounced into the stands.
  • Two outs later, Tommy Harper (#2) homered.

And the Reds took the lead with two more in the sixth:

  • With two outs, Don Pavletich walked.
  • When Leo Cardenas doubled, Pavletich tried to score from first. There was a play at the plate, but Pavletich beat the throw – and Cardenas moved to third.
  • Steve Boros tripled to score Cardenas and make it 4-2.

And the Reds extended the lead with two more in the eighth:

  • With Ray Culp (7-7) relieving, Frank Robinson singled and stole second.
  • After Culp struck out Deron Johnson, Don Pavletich homered (#3) to end the scoring at 6-2.

The Phillies got eight hits – but all eight were singles.

Nuxhall (8-4) got the win and Billy McCool picked up the save (#4) with a scoreless inning and two-thirds.

Dennis Bennett (9-7) took the loss.
