Two aces started the second game of the series:
- Jim Bunning (10-4) for the Phillies.
- Don Drysdale (13-9) for the Dodgers.
Play Ball:
But neither ace made it past three innings as the game turned out to be anything but a pitcher’s duel.
The Dodgers broke on top in the first inning:
- Maury Wills led off with an infield single – his fifth hit of the series.
- With Jim Gilliam batting, Wills broke with the pitch and got a great jump. So when Gilliam laid down a bunt, Wills tried to go from first to third. Clay Dalrymple was slow getting to the bunt and Wills beat the throw –Gilliam safe at first.
- After Willie Davis flew out, Ron Fairly hit a ground ball to second. Cookie Rojas fielded the ball, but overthrew first and the ball ricocheted into the outfield – Wills scoring easily and Gilliam scoring all the way from first. Fairly took second.
- Tommy Davis singled – Fairly stopping at third.
- After Derrell Griffith flew out for the second out, John Roseboro singled to score Fairly and make it 3-0.
After Drysdale retired the Phillies without trouble in the bottom of the first, the Dodgers tacked on a run in the second:
- Maury Wills tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jim Gilliam.
The Phillies got to Drysdale in the bottom half:
- With one out, Clay Dalrymple and Cookie Rojas singled.
- Ruben Amaro doubled to score Dalrymple – Rojas stopping at third.
Sensing that Jim Bunning didn’t have his best stuff, Gene Mauch wanted to seize the opportunity to get back in the game. So he lifted Bunning for pinch-hitter Johnny Briggs – 3-for-10 as a pinch-hitter.
- Mauch’s strategy paid off when Briggs singled to score Rojas – Amaro stopping at third.
- Tony Gonzalez singled to score Amaro and trim the lead to 4-3 – Briggs stopping at second.
- After Richie Allen flew out, Don Drysdale walked Johnny Callison to load the bases.
- Wes Covington’s two-run single put the Phillies on top 5-4.
After a scoreless third inning – with Rick Wise now on the mound – the Phillies put the game away in the bottom of the fourth:
- Tony Gonzalez doubled to right.
- Richie Allen hit a playable line drive to left, but Tommy Davis dropped it – Gonzalez moving to third and Allen safe at first.
Walter Alston yanked Drysdale and replaced him with Ron Perranoski (4-5).
- Perranoski walked Johnny Callison to load the bases.
- Alex Johnson pinch-hit for Wes Covington and hit a two-run single to boost the lead to 7-4 – boosting his average to .412.
- With runners on first and third, John Herrnstein singled Callison across the plate to make it 8-4 Phillies – Johnson stopping at second.
- Clay Dalrymple bunted to move the runners to second and third with one out.
- Cookie Rojas lined out to deep center to score Alex Johnson and make it 9-4.
The Dodgers added a single run in the top of the six:
- Nate Oliver walked.
- Wes Parker pinch-hit for Perranoski and walked.
- Maury Wills forced Parker at second – Oliver taking third.
- Jim Gilliam singled to score Oliver and trim the deficit to 9-5.
The Phillies answered in the bottom half of the six:
- John Herrnstein homered (#4).
And the Dodgers scored another singleton in top of the seventh:
- Tommy Davis homered (#6) to finish the scoring at 10-6.
Rick Wise (2-1) earned the win and Ed Roebuck got the save (#11) – both in relief – while Don Drysdale (13-10) took the loss.
