Chicago was the first stop for the Phillies for three games with the Cubs – who were struggling in eighth place:

  • Five games under .500.
  • 13½ games out of first place.

The Phillies led the season series 8-4.

With the wind blowing out at Wrigley, Ray Culp (8-7) took the mound versus Dick Ellsworth (12-13) in the first game.

Play Ball:

The Phillies got started in the top the first:

  • Cookie Rojas singled and moved to third on Johnny Callison’s double.
  • After Richie Allen struck out, Frank Thomas doubled to clear the bases and make it 2-0.

No more scoring until the Phillies came to bat in the third:

  • Cookie Rojas singled.
  • Two outs later, Frank Thomas doubled to score Rojas.

The Cubs hit the scoreboard in the bottom of the third:

  • Joey Amalfitano tripled and scored on Doug Clemens’ single.

The Phils and Cubs traded runs in the fourth.

In the top of the fourth:

  • Tony Taylor and Ruben Amaro singled – both moving up a base on Billy Williams’ error in left.
  • One out later, Taylor scored when Dick Ellsworth uncorked a wild pitch to make it 4-1.

In the bottom of the fourth:

  • Andre Rodgers homered (#10) to cut the deficit to 4-2.

Then the Cubs made a game of it by scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth:

  • Doug Clemens doubled.
  • One out later, Ron Santo walked.
  • Ernie Banks cleared the bases with three-run homer (#14) to give the Cubs a 5-4 lead.

Gene Mauch replaced Ray Culp with Ed Roebuck (4-2), and Roebuck ended the inning with a 6-4-3 double-play.

The Phillies jumped on the Cubs in the top of the sixth:

  • Gus Triandos homered (#4) to tie it up 5-5.
  • One out later, Ruben Amaro doubled.
  • Pat Corrales pinch-hit for Roebuck and walked.
  • Ellsworth hit Tony Gonzalez to load the bases.

Fearing Gonzalez might be hurt, Mauch sent Johnny Briggs in to run for him.

  • Johnny Callison cleared the bases with a grand slam (#19) to increase the Phillies lead to 9-4.

Bob Kennedy replaced Dick Ellsworth with Don Elston (1-1), and Elston retired the side on two ground balls.

The Phillies piled on with three runs in the top of the eighth:

  • With one out, Johnny Callison doubled and moved to third on a wild pitch.
  • Richie Allen singled to score Callison.
  • Lindy McDaniel (1-4) came in to pitch, and walked Frank Thomas.
  • One out later, Gus Triandos walked to load the bases.
  • Tony Taylor singled to score Thomas and make it 12-5.

The Phillies added another run in the top of the ninth:

  • With one out, Johnny Briggs singled.
  • One out later, Bobby Wine doubled to score Briggs and end the scoring at 13-5 Phillies.

In the bottom of the ninth, John Boozer (2-2) shut down the Cubs 1-2-3 to pick up the win.

Dick Ellsworth (12-14) took the loss.


Around the League:

The Giants evened the series with the Cardinals with a 6-3 win to keep pace with the Phillies ─ three games back. Orlando Cepeda (#20) and Willie Mays (#33) both hit two-run homers to power the Giants.
