Dennis Bennett (9-8) versus Ernie Broglio (6-9).

No score until the Cubs came to bat in the bottom of the second:

Joey Amalfitano singled.
Leo Burke hit a ground ball to short. Ruben Amaro fielded the ball. With little chance to get Burke, Amaro threw to first anyway. His throw bounced in the dirt and rolled to the wall allowing Amalfitano and Burke to move up one base.
Billy Williams singled to score Amalfitano – Burke stopping at third.
When Ron Santo grounded into a 6-4-3 double-play, Burke scored to make it 3-0.

Broglio took a two-hit shutout into the top of the ninth before the Phillies got on the scoreboard:

After Broglio struck out pinch-hitter John Herrnstein for the first out, Tony Gonzalez doubled.
When Richie Allen flew out to deep center, Gonzalez tagged and moved to third.
Johnny Callison hit a ground ball to second that should’ve ended the game, but the ball handcuffed Joey Amalfitano and allowed Gonzalez to score.

Ernie Broglio retired Wes Covington to end the game and picked up the win (7-9) with a three-hit complete-game.

Dennis Bennett – who hadn’t won since beating the Giants more than a month earlier on July 5 – took the loss and dropped to .500 (9-9).

The Giants were idle, but picked up ½ game in the standings to cut the gap to three games behind the Phillies.
