After taking two of three from the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Phillies were idle before beginning a four-game weekend series at Connie Mack Stadium with the New York Mets.
The date was June 11, 1964.
Meanwhile, the Giants lost 6-5 to the Milwaukee Braves in San Francisco. Warren Spahn (5-4) was the winner – with the help of Tony Cloninger’s first save. Ex-Phil Jack Sanford (4-6) took the loss.
Eddie Mathews picked up four RBIs for the Braves and Felipe Alou collected the game-winning RBI with a solo shot (#5) in the top of the eighth.
Jesus Alou picked up two RBIs in a ninth-inning rally that fell one sun short for the Giants.
The loss by the Giants created a virtual tie for first place with the idle Phils.
