Phillies Idle
The date was June 22, 1964, and the Phillies were idle after going 6-2 on the short road trip. They would be playing three games at home with the Cubs before going back on the road.
McCovey Slams
Trailing 2-0 after five innings, the Giants rallied for a five-spot in the top of the sixth en route to a 6-2 victory over the Reds in Cincinnati.
Willie McCovey’s grand slam off John Tsitouris – his 11th home run of the season – was the difference.
Bobby Bolin (2-2) picked up the win with the help of a four-inning save from Billy Pierce – his second save of the year. Tsitouris (3-5) took the loss.
The win enabled the Giants to pick up ½ game on the idle Phillies and now trailed the Phillies by 1½ games.
