Eagles Filipino Quarterback

philippine islands imageTim Tebow was born in the City of Makati on the Philippine Islands.

Makati is one of 16 cities that comprise metropolitan Manilla on Luzon island.

Tebow’s parents – Robert and Pamela – met while they were attending the University of Florida during the late 1960s. Robert was a sophomore and Pamela was a freshman. They married in 1971 – before she graduated.

Robert Tebow became a Baptist minister. He and Pamela settled in Florida and started a family with four children. Prior to Tim’s birth, Robert Tebow moved his family to the Philippines to serve as missionaries and to build a ministry in a rural area on the island of Luzon.

placental abruption imageNear the beginning of 1987, Pamela lapsed into a coma after contracting amoebic dysentery. During her hospitalization, it was discovered that she was pregnant. It was also discovered that the drugs used to treat her had caused a severe placental abruption of the fetus.

Doctors predicted the fetus would be stillborn and recommended abortion.

But because of their religious beliefs, Robert and Pamela Tebow refused.

Pamela experienced a normal childbirth on August 14, 1987, and Tim Tebow came into the world.

The family returned to Florida during the 1990s and settled in Jacksonville – where they home-schooled their five children.

In 1996, Florida passed legislation which came to be known as “The Tim Tebow Law.” The law allowed home-schooled students to participate in athletics at their local high school. This enabled Tim to play football at Trinity Christian Academy. He played tight end, but he wanted to play quarterback.

So the family established a residence in St. Johns County which allowed Tim to attend Allen D. Nease High School where he got the opportunity to play quarterback.

The rest – as they say – is history.

• He was named Florida’s Player of the Year after his junior year.

• During his senior year, he led his team to the state championship, made the All-State team, was named Florida’s Mr. Football and repeated as Player of the Year, and made the Parade magazine All-American team.

• In college, Tebow led the Florida Gators to two SEC and BCS titles, was a two-time All-American, and won the Heisman Trophy.

His pro career could be called checkered or under-achieving.

• In two seasons in Denver – 2010 and 2011 – he led the Broncos to one playoff win.

• With the New York Jets in 2012, he rarely got off the bench.

• He failed to make the New England Patriots after a 2013 tryout.

And he sat out the 2014 season.

The deal Tim Tebow signed with the Eagles on Monday is a minimum deal for NFL veterans with three years of service. If he makes the team, he’ll be paid increments of $38,824 every week he remains on the 53-man roster. That adds up to $660,000 with no signing bonus and no guaranteed moneys.

He will receive $195 per off-season workout and $1,800 per week during training camp.

Opinions are still conflicted about whether or not Tim Tebow is being given a legitimate chance to make the team, whether he’s going to be used as cannon fodder during training camp because Sam Bradford may or may not be able to participate in drills, or whether Chip Kelly is merely doing a favor for Urban Meyer and/or Jimmy Sexton.

Meyer was Tebow’s coach at Florida and Sexton is Tebow’s agent.

In any case, let’s say maligayang pagdating to the Eagles Filipino Quarterback.
