In case you didn’t notice, some former Oregon Ducks are flying under the radar as they leave the Eagles’ roost.
Casey Matthews signed as a free agent with the Minnesota Vikings on Tuesday – thus ending his four-year career with the Eagles.
He was much maligned during his tenure in Philly – and rightly so from where I’m sitting. Since Chip became the head coach of the Eagles, it appeared as if Chip Kelly was throwing a bone to a former Oregon player who didn’t seem worthy of making the roster.
In his four years here, Matthews dressed for 65 games and started 15 of them – 11 of those starts coming during the 2014 season filling in for the injured Mychal Kendricks and DeMeco Ryans. He made a career-high 62 tackles in 2014 and was lauded for improvement in play. But compared to his first three seasons, just getting on the field was an improvement. If he could play, he’d still be an Eagle.
In partial fairness to Chip Kelly, he didn’t darft Casey Matthews. That distinction belongs to Andy Reid and Howie Roseman who selected Matthews in the fourth round of the 2011 NFL draft.
While Chip Kelly wasn’t responsible for bringing Matthews to town, he was responsible for keeping him here. To outsiders like myself, the only reason for retaining him seemed to be the common links to the Oregon Ducks shared by Matthews and Kelly.
In his two – now going on three years – with the Eagles, Chip Kelly has shown a prejudice toward players with Oregon ties. And, once again in the estimation of outsiders such as mself, some of those players just didn’t seem good enough.
There are still seven former Ducks on the Eagles roster:
• Kiko Alonso LB
• Brandon Bair DE
• Kenjon Barner RB
• Josh Huff WR
• Will Murphy WR
• Walter Thurmond CB
• Wade Keliikipi DT
But in addition to the announced departure of Casey Matthews, two more former Ducks have also flown under the radar on their way out of town – Josh Kaddu LB and Taylor Hart DE. I don’t know when Kaddu and Hart left or where they went, but they are no longer on the official roster.
In addition, there’s Jeff Maehl. Technically, Maehl is no longer on the roster. The Eagles held exclusive rights to him on the free agent market, but the deadline to sign him in that capacity ended on March 10 – as far as I can determine.
Chip brought Jeff Maehl to town in 2013, after Maehl played in only three games in two seasons with the Houston Texans.
With the Eagles, he played in 24 games in two seasons – mostly on special teams. He caught nine passes for 113 yards (12.6 yards/catch) and scored one TD.
I’ve been trying to find out if anyone tendered Maehl an offer, but can’t get an answer. So I’m going with what it says below.
Chip and Howie drafted Taylor Hart in the fifth round of the 2014 draft. He did not dress for any games.
Josh Kaddu was selected in the fifth round of the 2012 NFL draft by the Miami Dolphins. After two seasons in Miami, he spent the 2014 season with the Minnesota Vikings. He’s played in only six games total.
I have no idea when he came to the Eagles or when he left – but he’s not currently on the roster.
With Casey Matthews departure – and the probable departure of Jeff Maehl – it seems to me that Chip may be softening his stance on former Ducks. We’ll see how that plays out.
